GUWAHATI, March 26 � Noted singer Mitali Choudhury died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai around 12-45 am today. She was suffering from ovary cancer and was in the hospital since February 17 last. She was 50.
The news of her untimely death cast a pall of gloom in the State. Messages mourning her death have been pouring in from all over the State at the time of filing this report.
According to family sources, the noted singer, who has a good number of popular songs �, like the Burha Luitor bishal bahuwe, Bogakoi dhuniya dekhi morom loga, Raati mayabinee moi ahiso kamana hoi, Protham dekhar madhubela (with Khagen Mahanta), Ketiyaba mor nijake eman asahay yen lage, Aaru nusudhiba mok phular subhash kiyo bhal pao, etc., to her credit, was found developing multiple health problems early this month.
She was shifted to the ICU of the hospital on March 2. Dialysis had been performed on her every alternate day since March 19 due to the kidney problems she developed. She was put on the ventilator on March 20.
Gifted with a melodious voice, Mitali Choudhury started her singing career when she was a schoolgirl, rendering her voice for Raati mayabinee moi filmed for an Assamese movie. The song was an instant hit.
She later attained nationwide popularity and went on to sing for the popular TV serials like Akbar the Great, Ramayana and many Hindi films.
She leaves behind her husband, former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Minister Dilip Saikia and her daughter.
Her body will be flown tomorrow to the city and her last rites will be performed at the Navagraha cremation ground in the afternoon hours, said her husband Dilip Saikia.
