AIZAWL, Sept 28 – A massive procession was taken out here today in protest against hydro electric power projects in the north eastern parts of Mizoram mainly inhabited by the Hmar community.
The Mizoram Government should withdraw from pursuing the projects and ensure the protection of the constitutional rights of the tribal people, the Sinlung People’s Collective (SPC) and the Sinlung People’s Human Rights Organisation (SPHRO) said.
The hydro electric power projects, proposed to be constructed in the Hmar-inhabited areas are 1,500 MW Tipaimukh dam, 210 MW Tuivai hydel project, 60 MW Tuirial hydel project, 40 MW Tuivawl hydel project and 12 MW Serlui ‘B’ hydel project.
Copies of the memorandum were sent to the PM, Union Home Minister, Minister for Environment and Forests, the Chief Minister and CMDs of NEEPCO and NHPC. – PTI
