 Students’ plea to Himanta

 SILCHAR, Sept 27 - In a memorandum to the Minister of Education, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Barak Valley on Saturday, members the Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU) led by its president Biswarup Bhattacharjee, general secretary Aritra Dhar and others brought forth the issue of financial crisis faced by the students owing to the lockdown. The students requested the Minister to speak to the University authorities to exempt admission fees of the students for this year only. Further, they also demanded setting up of a State University in Barak Valley and the opening of an additional Science College here to accommodate the rush of students. The union also drew the attention of the Minister on other key issues like poor quality of water supply inside the university and the dilapidated condition of the road connecting the town with the university. They also demanded government assistance for the children of the employees of the closed Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram. – Staff Correspondent

Waterlogging at hospital

KALIABOR, Sept 27 - Waterlogging at the Jakhalabandha hospital has been creating massive problems not for only the patients of the hospital, but also for the campus residents. It is a very important hospital and patients come from every nook and corner of Kaliabor subdivision here. The campus of the entire hospital is in a low-lying area and the drainage system is also not properly maintained. The public here has urged the Health department /authority concerned to look into the matter and take proper and urgent steps for its upkeep. – ANN Service

Writer Jagat Bora remembered

DERGAON, Sept 27 - Prolific writer, retired civil service officer, social worker, career counsellor, actor Jagat Chandra Bora was remembered at his native place Kamargaon at a function held on his adyashraddha on Sunday. The writer originally hailing from Dergaon Kamargaon died of corona at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital on September 17 and his rituals were performed at Guwahati as he was residing at Guwahati. The programme organised under the aegis of Nature organisation AASHRAY in association with the residents of Kamargaon was attended by about 50 individuals representing different organisations. The meeting, chaired by the president of Kamargaon Namghar Parichalana Samiti Badan Ch Bora and moderated by AASHRAY secretary Sanjoy Kr Hazarika and addressed by its president Sochi Kr Gohain was addressed by several individuals. Before that, rich floral tributes were paid at the portrait of the writer by several individuals. – Correspondent

Golap Saikia’s death condoled

Morigaon, Sept 27 - The Morigaon district unit of the Journalists’ Association of Assam (JAA) has deeply mourned the death of Golap Saikia, News Reader of All India Radio (AIR), Guwahati and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. In a press release, Dalim Phukan and Paramananda Deka, president and general secretary respectively of the Morigaon unit of the JAA said that Golap Saikia, a radio artist of the Song and Drama division of the All India Radio breathed his last yesterday at a private hospital, in Guwahati due to Covid-19 infection. His premature demise cast a pall of gloom among the journalist circle in undivided Nagaon district. Golap Saikia contributed a lot to the research works of the Borgeets of Srimanta Sankaradeva and Madhavadeva. He organised many workshops on Borgeets across the State in the last two decades. – ANN Service

Case against resort owner

DIGBOI, Sept 27 - Following the death of one Mangal Urang (38), a youth engaged as a temporary worker at a resort at Bengali Balijan at the campus of the resort itself, under Digboi Police station on Friday afternoon, a case was registered against the owner and management of the resort for alleged act of negligence not amounting to culpable homicide. According to Digboi Police, based on a complainant lodged by Buddheswar Urang, the brother of the deceased, a case No 226/20 was registered on Friday last u/s 304(A), 34 of IPC. It may be recalled here that the corpse of the deceased was spotted lying on the ground within the resort premises on Friday afternoon from where he was immediately rushed to Digboi civil hospital where the doctor declared him brought dead. Following the unfortunate death, local people comprising the tea tribe student body took to the streets resorted to two hours of road blockade on the NH-38 along the Digboi-Makum road near the resort. – ANN Service

Protest against farm bills

SIVASAGAR, Sept 27 - Chatra Mukti Sangram Samity, Sivasagar district committee on Saturday burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raised anti-BJP slogans protesting the adoption of three allegedly anti-farmer bills in the Parliament into Acts namely – The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; The Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. Led by organising secretaries, Ritumoni Hazarika and Porasar Konwar,the protesters demanded scrapping of the Acts and resignation of the Modi-led government which they termed as evil, reactionary, communal and anti-people.– Correspondent

Two elephants electrocuted

Mirza, Sept 27 - Two adult wild elephants were electrocuted at Bakrapara village near Rani in Kamrup district in the wee hours on September 26. Villagers said that the two adult elephants – one male and other female, aged around 35-40 years, were killed when they had come down from the nearby hilly forests reserve to the Bakrapara village for food and got electocuted when they came into contact with a electric cable at Bakrapara village which was dangling from its post following incessant rains. Senior forest and Veterinary department officials reached the spot and a post-mortem was carried out and the elephants buried the same day itself. – ANN Service
