AGARTALA, Sept 26 - Police have arrested four persons allegedly involved in the gang-rape of a housewife in the Ushabazar area on the outskirts of Agartala. The victim, who was abducted and allegedly raped by 10 men, is currently undergoing treatment at the Tripura Medical College. A massive manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining accused.

Police said the incident – which has caused a massive uproar in the State – occurred on Tuesday night when the woman was returning home in an autorickshaw from the GBP Hospital where one of her two children had been admitted. The autorickshaw driver allegedly took her to Ushabazar close to the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport where some youths were waiting in another vehicle.

According to the victim, she was forced to get into the vehicle where she was raped by ten men. After she became unconscious, she was taken to the Circuit House area and dumped on the roadside.

“We have already arrested four persons, including the autorickshaw driver. Further investigation is on,” a senior police officer said today.

Meanwhile, State Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath visited the victim and assured all possible help to her. “This is a very heinous crime and the Government will show zero tolerance towards such incidents. Four persons have already been booked by the police and the remaining ones will be arrested soon. Law will take its own course,” he told media persons.

The CPI(M) State committee has condemned the incident and demanded arrest of a ruling party MLA, who had allegedly asked the police not to register the FIR of the case. It also sought action against the erring police officers, who had allegedly refused to register the FIR.

Congress leader Subal Bhowmik has also condemned the incident.
