 3 more COVID deaths

 JORHAT, Sept 23 - Jorhat district reported three more COVID-19 deaths during the past three days, taking its death toll to 27 on Tuesday. Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, Roshni A Korati informed that Sureswar Bora (65 ) of Ajay Nagar, Number 1 Block of, Nogen Bora (72) of MES Gate, and Pradip Gogoi (70) of Selenghat in the district, died of COVID-19. Meanwhile, the overall infection tally has touched 8,360. – Correspondent

Luit Jyoti completes 22 years

NALBARI, Sept 23 - Luit Jyoti, a weekly newspaper published from Nalbari town, has completed 22 years yesterday. The vernacular newspaper was first published in 1998 from Ajanta Press of Nalbari. The editor of the newspaper, Arup Kumar Sarma said that the newspaper has accorded priority in highlighting the local issues. – Correspondent

AASU conference

NALBARI, Sept 23 - The 21st conference of AASU, Nalbari unit was held at Uttar Pub Khata Vidyapith ME School of Khudra Senikuchi on Monday. The day-long programme included flag hoisting, swahid tarpan,delegates meeting, Satirtha Sanmilan,open meeting among others. The meeting constituted a new executive committee with Rubul Barman as president and Naba Kumar Deka as general secretary respectively. – Correspondent

71 fresh cases in Cachar

SILCHAR, Sept 23 - As many as 71 persons were tested COVID-19 positive in Cachar district on Tuesday. District Media Expert, Suman Choudhury informed that of the infected cases, 62 persons were detected through the Rapid Antigen Test, while nine persons were found to be positive from the RTPCR tests. Meanwhile, Dr Bhaskar Gupta, vice principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital informed that 21 patients are in a critical condition while 30 patients at the hospital are kept under oxygen support. – Correspondent

Youths arrested

BARPETA, Sept 23 - Five persons were arrested at Howli in Barpeta district on charges of involvement in honey trapping. According to information, a group of youths recorded a secret video of a businessman and demanded Rs 5 lakh in cash from him. The businessman informed the police and ultimately the youths were arrested. They have been identified as Subrat Basak, Prasenjit Saha, Prasenjit Das, Bhaskar Das and Nitai Sil. – Correspondent

Ex-MP’s house ransacked

DIPHU, Sept 23 - The residence of a senior Congress leader and former Member of Parliament (MP) of Diphu constituency Biren Sing Engti was ransacked yesterday. According to a report, the miscreants entered the residence and started vandalising. One person was arrested in this connection. – Correspondent

COVID patient dies

Gossaigaon, Sept 23 - One COVID patient died at Gossaigaon yesterday. Bishnu Kumar Basumatary, who was an assistant secretary of Binyakhata Samabai Sammittee, was in home isolation. But he developed complications and died en route to the hospital. His last rites were performed as per rules set by the State government. – ANN Service

Retd employees protest

JORHAT, Sept 23 - Retired employees of the Tocklai Tea Research Institute staged a demonstration in front of the main gate of the institute seeking payment of all post-retirement dues. The employees said that due to non-payment of their dues they were facing lots of difficulties during the present COVID-19 pandemic situation. – Correspondent   

Radio teaching

DHEMAJI, Sept 23 - Samagra Shiksha (SS), Dhemaji has been conducting a series of radio teaching for the lower and upper primary level of students in the district since July 21. The programme was conducted through Dibrugarh University Community Radio Programme with a function named ‘Gyan Malini Praggar Batere’ in both Missing and Assamese languages. The programme has already completed seven episodes. A ceremony was organised on the occasion at Samagra Shiksha, Dhemaji office yesterday. The ceremony was initiated by Punjub Doley, District Programme Officer (DPO), SS, Dhemaji. – ANN Service
