Tripura Opposition boycotts House session
Correspondent
AGARTALA, Sept 23 – Tripura Opposition legislators on Friday boycotted second half of the Assembly proceedings in protest against Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s alleged lenient role in a sensitive case like MLA Partha Das whose SC certificate proved forged.

During the ‘zero hour’, opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath moved a private member’s resolution seeking immediate step against the legislator after his SC certificate was proved forged by State Level Scrutiny Committee (SLSC).

However, Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath rejected the motion saying that the MLA had already approached High Court challenging the SLSC verdict.

Speaker’s decision angered the opposition legislators who had been pressing for the motion. As the Speaker remained reluctant, angry Congress MLAs rushed to the well of the House and raised slogans against the Chief Minister for keeping mum on the sensitive issue.

Amidst slogans, the Speaker tried to proceed with the scheduled business but could not make it. As the situation was going out of control, Debnath adjourned the house till 2 pm.

Later talking to media in the lobby, the opposition leader slammed the Chief Minister for adopting a soft stand on the sensitive issue.

Noting that the SLSC’s verdict is final in such a case as ruled by the Supreme Court, Nath alleged that the Chief Minister is leaving no stone unturned to shield the ‘tainted’ treasury bench member.

“As per the Supreme Court’s ruling, the finding of SLSC is absolutely final and the verdict could not be challenged. However, the government has not yet taken any move to initiate action against the RSP MLA.
