 Ex-MLA’s nephew arrested

 DHUBRI, Sept 21 - Yunush Ali Bepari, nephew of former Golakganj MLA and Congress MP candidate in the last elections Abu Taher Bepari, was arrested by Chagolia police under Golakganj PS on Sunday over his alleged involvement in several cattle smuggling cases. Police said he is wanted in several cases involving illegal cattle trade and for allegedly running an international cattle smuggling racket. – Correspondent

Special summary revision

MANGALDAI, Sept 21 - With only a few months left for the general election, the Mangaldai Election Department under the Darrang Deputy Commissioner has started preparations for the polls. Circle-level meetings of officials for special summary revision of photo electoral rolls have been organised. Election Officer Hemashri Khanikar said that due to the pandemic situation, they avoided centrally convened meetings at the district level, and instead held a series of meetings at the revenue circle-level for all the four assembly constituencies under Mangaldai. The meetings were held under the supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Bora, who is in charge of the Election branch. – Correspondent

New SDO (C) at Gossaigaon

GOSSAIGAON, Sept 21 - Pallavi Sarkar joined as SDO (Civil), Gossaigaon, on Monday. An IAS officer from the 2017 batch, she submitted her joining report to the Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner. She was transferred from North Salmara, Abhayapuri. Her predecessor Ansula Basumatary was transferred to Udalguri after serving Gossaigaon for eight months. – ANN Service

Ex-AASU activists’ meet

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 21 - A get-together of former activists of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) of undivided Dibrugarh district during the historic Assam Agitation was held at Doomdooma Marwari Panchyati Bhawan on Sunday. In the programme presided over by former AASU leader Biren Deka, the former activists became nostalgic and recalled the days of the Assam Agitation. At the beginning, one-minute silence was observed in the memory of AASU activists who have passed away. The All Tinsukia District Students’ Union in collaboration with the Doomdooma Regional Committee presented a gamosa and a pen each to the former AASU activists. – Correspondent

150 BJP workers join Cong

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 21 - The Kakopothar Block Congress Committee organised a meeting at Rajiv Bhawan here on Sunday, in view of the upcoming Assembly polls. Former Doomdooma MLA and former BJP state vice president Dilip Moran who joined the Congress recently was felicitated. Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha general secretary Rupesh Gowala was also felicitated for being nominated as the general secretary of APCC. More than 150 BJP workers joined the Congress. Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij, Tinsukia District Congress Committee general secretary Deoti Baruah, Kakopothar Block Congress Committee president Lakhi Sonowal were present. – Correspondent

Training on fish farming

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - Under the initiative of NABARD, a training-cum-awareness programme on Integrated Fish Farming was held at Dillai, Karbi Anglong on September 18, targeting members of local food producers’ organisation (FPO), Dillai Fish Producers’ Society. A total of 50 members from the FPO participated in the one-day training provided by NGO Kalong-Kapili. NABARD Karbi Anglong DDM P Bulte said scientific method of pisciculture with a cluster-based approach will benefit the farmers as that will protect their interests and ensure satisfactory profit. Kalong-Kapili founder-director Jyotish Talukdar spoke on the scope of fish farming in Assam, and stressed the importance of adopting scientific and climate-smart methods of fish farming that have already ushered perceptible changes in rural and remote areas of the state. – Staff Reporter

MIRZA, Sept 21 - The annual general meeting of South Kamrup Press Club was held recently at the Guwahati Subdivision Market Committee, Uparhali. SKPC executive president Ashwinee Talukdar, secretary Hiten Mali, and others like Mrigendra Kumar Bora, Kamal Chandra Medhi, Biswajit Kalita, Niren Mali, Dhiraj Kumar Das, Tapan Das, Pabitra Kumar Das, Saraswati Thakuria, Fatik Thakuria, Bidyut Bukash Baruah spoke on various issues. A new committee with Dhiraj Kumar Das as president and Pabitra Kumar Das as secretary was constituted. Nalbari DC donates blood

NALBARI, Sept 21 - The blood bank of Swahid Mukunda Kakati Civil Hospital organised a blood donation camp on September 20. The camp was inaugurated by DC Purabi Konwar, who herself donated blood to encourage donors. A total of 20 blood donors donated blood at the camp, which was also attended by hospital superintendent Dr Ramesh Bhattacharya, Joint Director, Health Services, Dr Nalini Barman, and Dr Kameswar Lahkar among others. – Correspondent

Arms, ammunition found

GOSSAIGAON, Sept 21 - Kachugaon police led by officer-in-charge Ananda Rabha and assisted by Kokrajhar Town SI Latuk Das unearthed a huge quantity of arms and ammunition hidden in the forest at Santipur by the side of the Pekuwa river under Kachugaon PS on Saturday night. Police seized grenades, detonators, magazines, 7.65 mm pistols, AK-47 rifles, Uzi rifles along with arms manufacturing equipment. No one has been arrested till the filling of this report. – ANN Service

No helmet, no fuel

HAILAKANDI, Sept 21 - The Hailakandi district administration has asked petrol pump owners not to give fuel to two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets. An order issued by Deputy Commissioner cum District Road Safety Committee chairman Megh Nidhi Dahal stated that not wearing head gear is in flagrant violation of Section 129 of Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 and punishable under Section 194(D). The step was taken following reports that many riders do not wear helmets. – Correspondent

BAIHATA CHARIALI, Sept 21 - A special felicitation meeting was held at Kamrupa Girls’ College at Karara on September 20 to felicitate meritorious students under the jurisdiction of the Karara central unit of AASU. A total of 80 students were felicitated for their good results in the HSLC and HS examinations. Besides this, a number of heads of institutions were also felicitated.
