Demand to check erosion at Pahukhowa Koila Basti
Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA, Sept 19 - A four-member delegation of the Flood and Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (F&ERSF) of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts visited the erosion-hit Pahukhowa Koila Basti area in Tinsukia and took stock of the situation on Thursday. The delegation comprised forum president Binod Kedia, vice president Bhabesh Upadhyaya, secretary Prakash Rai and media adviser Santanu Goswami.

Unabated soil erosion by the Kundil river has become a major cause for concern in the area but the Water Resources Department is yet to take any step to control it. In the last 25 years, one PWD road, 72 dwellings, school buildings and naamghars have been gobbled up by the river.

Frustrated at the government inaction, the villagers tried to repair an eroded portion of the riverbank by digging up a drain on their own to prevent further erosion but due to lack of money they could not complete the work.

The villagers want the government to take up this project in order to permanently solve this perennial problem. They also sought cooperation of F&ERSF in this regard.

F&ERSF president Binod Kedia and secretary Prakash Rai demanded the government to immediately take scientific measures to solve the proble.
