Complete lockdown in Gangtok areas from Sept 21
A Correspondent
GANGTOK, Sept 19 - Areas within the Gangtok Municipal Corporation stretching from Ranipool to Bulbulay will be under complete lockdown from September 21 to 27. This was decided by the administration following a spike in virus cases in the State capital and its vicinity. As per an order, there will be no movement of passenger or private vehicles except for those on essential duty. However, there will be no restrictions on inter-State movement from October 1 as no registration will be required to enter Sikkim.

With the Government trying to open up the tourism sector, hotels, homestays and other tourism-related activities will be allowed from October 10. The odd-even system will be relaxed for taxis from October 1, but it will stay in place for private vehicles. The State Government offices will operate on 30 per cent strength, stated the authorities.

Meanwhile, with the Assembly session scheduled on Monday, several MLAs have tested positive for COVID-19. They include Agriculture Minister Loknath Sharma, Power Minister MN Sherpa, Forest Minister Karma Loday Bhutia, Melli MLA Farwanti Tamang and Barfung MLA TT Bhutia.

In a press release, the State police appealed to the people to behave responsibly in view of local transmission of COVID-19 cases at Gangtok. The police will launch a Statewide drive with extensive checking of public places and vehicles, and impose fines on violators of COVID-19 protocols, the press release added.
