GANGTOK, Sept 18 – About 8,000 earthquake damaged rural houses have been reconstructed in Sikkim under the Reconstruction of Earthquake Damaged Rural Houses Project (REDRH).
The house have been reconstructed for the victims of the devastating September 18, 2011 earthquake with a funding support of Rs 4.89 lakh per house.
A total of 5,000 houses are under various stages of construction, and many houses were inaugurated earlier. Now a total of 503 new houses are set to be inaugurated today in different parts of the State.
Secretary, Rural Management and Development department (RMDD), DR Nepal told this correspondent that the homeowner-driven implementation model was adopted and it helped to establish a sense of ownership and identity.
The house design, building standards, construction material (cement and steel), technical supervision and capital was provided by the project, while the home-owner undertook the actual construction, procured local construction material, arranged for mason and labour and also added their own finances.
