 AJP convener welcomed

 DHEMAJI, Sept 15 - Former AASU vice-president Chittaranjan Basumatary, who has been selected as convener of the newly-floated political party – Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) – was accorded a warm welcome at Dhemaji on Monday. Several AASU and AJYCP members received him and encouraged him to lead the party in Dhemaji district. The AASU members also took out a motorbike rally at Dhemaji town to receive their leader. Basumatary was involved with the AASU for a long time and finally resigned to prepare the base of the new party on the eve of 2021 Assembly elections. Sources said that Basumatary is all set to contest from 113 Dhemaji (ST) seat in the next elections. – Correspondent

Hundreds join BJP, Cong

SIVASAGAR, Sept 15 - Anti-CAA movement leader Suresh Chetia, former principal, Geleki Junior College and 205 others of the Congress and CPI joined the BJP on Monday. These include five ward members of the Geleki town committee. The new workers were welcomed by Mayur Borgohain, secretary, BJP Yuva Morcha and the meeting was presided over by Uzzal Hatimuria. In another meeting organised by Yuva Morcha at Borphukan GP, 50 members of various political parties joined the BJP on the same day. Hemanta Gogoi, district president, Yuva Morcha, Prafulla Raidingia, Ananta Hatimuria and other leaders spoke on the BJP’s political ethics. Meanwhile, Bijit Dutta, district Congress general secretary informed that hundreds of people from different organisations have joined the party since July. The mass joining programme is continuing in Sivasagar, Moran, Demow, Amguri and in all booth meetings, he added. – Correspondent

Fine collection in Dhubri

Dhubri, Sept 15 - Dhubri Police on Monday collected Rs 85,500 as fine for enforcement of Covid-related mask protocol from all over the district on the very first day of the drive. Police confirmed that this drive will continue as wearing of mask for protection of self and fellow citizens is mandatory, and not just to avoid police action or penalty. – Correspondent

Serological survey at Barpeta

BARPETA, Sept 15 - A serological survey study on Covid-19 was conducted at District Library Barpeta on Monday. The survey was conducted jointly by the district administration and the Health department in association with Medicity Diagonistic Centre, Guwahati and Srijan Asom Trust with a day-long programme. It was done with a view to ascertain whether the persons tested have acquired herd immunity against COVID-19 virus or not. ASHA workers, doctors, administrative officers, police personnel and journalists participated in the survey. It is expected that percentage of people immune to COVID-19 virus will be known by the blood test of these persons. – Correspondent

Book on Karbi Anglong released

DIPHU, Sept 15 - The second edition of the Karbi Anglongor Rajnoitik Itihas (Political History of Karbi Anglong), written by Borsing Rongphar, was formally released by Tuliram Ronghang Chief Executive Member of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council at a simple function held at Diphu recently. The 672-page book narrates the backdrop of the formation of Karbi Anglong Autonomous District and chronicles the coming of Karbi people to Assam, their historical past and their interactions with different communities and cultures, particularly the Ahoms, their meeting with the American Baptist missionaries, the process of emergence of Assamese nationality, colonial administration in the Hills, a brief history of the Autonomous State movement, the rise and decline of the ASDC, important political moments, brief sketches of the representatives of the district in the Assam Cabinet, results of elections from 1938 onwards. – Correspondent

Koch-Rajbongshi album

Gossaigaon, Sept 15 - A Koch-Rajbongshi language album Bandhure was released on Monday at Nepalpara, Chilarai Bhawan by the Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmiloni district Karmachari Parishad president, Ananta Ray. A meeting was held accordingly at the Chilarai Bhawan, Nepalpara near Gossaigaon town under the presidentship of Anjan Karjee. Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmiloni Gossaigaon district treasurer, Santa Ray, producer of the album, Dilip Kumar Ray, AKRSU’s central committee, assistant secretary, Sunodhar Ray, attended the function. – ANN Service

Foundation stone laid

GAURIPUR, Sept 15 - Ashok Kumar Singhi, MLA, Bilasipara East Constituency laid the foundation stone of Dr BR Ambedkar Bhawan on Monday at Surjyakhata-Ghoshpara area in Ward No.4 of Bilasipara town, the construction of which has already started. An amount of Rs 1,76,24000 has been sanctioned under the Directorate of ST Welfare Scheme, Government of Assam. The foundation stone laying ceremony was attended by Mridul Yadav, SDO (Civil), Bilasipara subdivision, Ramesh Roy, social worker, Chandan Das, ex-Ward Commissioner, Luchi Roy, BJP worker, Rima Gohain, Councillor, Manalisha Das, ex-Ward Commissioner and a few others. – Correspondent

Body formed

Patacharkuchi, Sept 15 - A full-fledged committee for the Bajali Zila Koch Rajbongshi Sangrami Manch was formed on September 11 in a meeting held at Pathsala. The meeting presided over by Kumud Chandra Pathak formed a 51-member committee with Kushal Roy as president and Jitumani Roy and Benudhar Roy as joint secretaries of the samiti. – ANN Service

Teachers feted

Patacharkuchi, Sept 15 - In a bid to encourage the teachers, the Barpeta district Elementary Education Officer Ratul Kumar Das in his individual capacity recently feted ten teachers of various schools under Bajali subdivision. The function was organised at Choukhuty High School premises with Hiranya Talukdar, a retired teacher in the chair. Manik Choudhury, a teacher of Choukhuty High School anchored the programme. The teachers were felicitated with a citation and a gamosa each. Ratul Das, DEEO and district mission coordinator, SSA urged the teachers to be more active and take the profession seriously for moulding human resources. Ananda Khataniar, brand ambassador of the Forest & Environment department also attended as a guest in the programme. The teachers felicitated were Niranjan Goswami, Dwijendra Kumar Das, Sashi Mohan Sarma, Ranjan Medhi, Mrinal Sarma, Bipul Lahkar, Nabajit Das, Babamani Das, Surya Basfor and Abdul Mutlib. – ANN Service

Patacharkuchi Press Club

Patacharkuchi, Sept 15 - Patacharkuchi Press Club observed its annual session on Sunday with a daylong programme. The organisation was established in 2002. The flag was hoisted by president Nava Kanta Kalita, which was followed by illumination by former scribe Jitendra Nath Das. Smriti tarpan was performed by advisor of the club Dilip Kumar Roy. The meeting passed the secretarial report and audit report and thereafter passed a number of important resolutions. President Nava Kanta Kalita urged the local scribes to perform their service sincerely and actively in the coming days. The term of the body is for two years and this was a midterm session and hence no new committee was formed. – ANN Service
