GUWAHATI, Sept 14 – Prof Hemanta Kumar Baruah of the Gauhati University (GU) has been appointed Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University by Governor JB Patnaik, who is the Chancellor of the University.
Prof Baruah, the senior-most teacher in the GU Statistics Department and a former Dean of the GU Faculty of Science, told this newspaper that he would try to develop the Bodoland University into a modern university by setting up all the modern departments of learning during his tenure.
The University is still in a nascent stage. It is yet to complete four years of its existence.
It has only ten departments and these do not include major departments like Physics, Chemistry, etc. Among the science departments, it has only Mathematical Science, Biotechnology and Computer Science. Among the Arts departments, it has Assamese, Bodo, Economics, English, History and Political Science. It has also the Business Administration department.
“I will need to study the situation there to formulate my line of action for developing the University. I have one more priority. This is to improve the quality of education in the schools and colleges of the BTAD areas by motivating the society. A Vice Chancellor has a role in inspiring the society for a forward move,” said Prof Baruah.
The GU Teachers’ Association (GUTA) felicitated Prof Baruah for his being appointed VC of the Bodoland University, at a function held in the GU Faculty House here this afternoon.
GU VC Dr Mridul Hazarika was also present at the function, presided over by Prof HP Sarma, former GUTA president and coordinated by Dr Dwipen Bezbaruah, present general secretary of the Association.
