GUWAHATI, Sept 14 – The National Institute of Infotech & Management (NIIM), Shillong is holding the 2nd National Congress on Indian Landslides with a two-day programme from tomorrow at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) here.
The main theme of the congress is seismicity and landslides and its subthemes include state specific case studies like monitoring and early warning system, landslide hazard zonation mapping, seismically induced landslides, snow avalanches and their mitigation and geo-engineered slopes and their stability, among others, said a press release here.
Anthropogenic pressure coupled with negligence of slopes and construction of non-engineered structures play a vital role for inducing the landslides in the fragile hilly areas of North East India and elsewhere in the country, said the organisers in the press release.
Landslides can also help prediction of the ground movement which otherwise may result in devastating landslides, they said.
The landslides congress will provide a good platform to the scientists, engineers and other academicians to interact collectively to fight the menace of landslides. A strategic action plan to mitigate landslide hazards of the NE region has also been proposed to be developed during the deliberations of the congress. The participants of the congress include delegates from the Central Government, State departments, universities, IITs, NGOs and the people actively involved in the area of landslide, said the organisers.
