GUWAHATI, Sept 14 – Government spokesperson and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today termed the ongoing protest against the transportation of turbines for the Lower Subansiri hydel project led by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) as uncalled-for, and said that it was vitiating the State's educational and developmental atmosphere by creating a anarchic situation.
Sarma also revealed that a ministerial group would soon have a dialogue with the AASU on the issue.
Addressing a press conference, Sarma said that the State Government would not have the Lower Subansiri project commissioned without addressing the widespread apprehensions over its downstream impact.
"We have already started the process of implementing the dozen-odd recommendations of the expert committee formed at the All Assam Students' Union's (AASU's) instance. The NHPC too has changed the design of the dam following the recommendations. And we are ready to sit for a talk with the AASU together with national and international experts on the issue. A ministerial group will be formed for the purpose," he said.
Sarma, however, said that there was little merit in having a dialogue with the KMSS which he sad was obsessed with agitation for agitation's sake and "want to make Assam perennially restive and consequently backward."
