ANN Service
SIVASAGAR, Sept 13 - Swahid Kamala Saikia Smritirakhya Samity, Dikhowmukh in association with Dikhowmukh Anchalik Chatra Santha, Sambadik Swahid Kamala Saikia Smritirakhya Samity, Sivasagar organised a sit-in demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday demanding handing over the investigation of journalist Kamala Saikia’s murder case, which took place on August 9,1991, to the CBI. Following a protest meeting, the agitationists submitted memorandums separately to the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner. Sivasagar Revenue Circle Officer, Sampritee Goswami received the memorandums on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner for onward submission.

Family members of the slain journalist had filed a case (no. 191/91) in Sivasagar PS u/s 365/302 IPC r/w Sec 3/4 TADA (P) Act. The Assam Police treated the case as closed on September 5, 1998. In the final report, it was stated that lack of circumstantial evidence led to the failure to arrest anyone. Kamala Saikia’s family members continued protesting the lackadaisical attitude of the then Government and pleaded with the Government to re-investigate the case through the CBI.

Responding to a petition filed by Dhanajoy Saikia, eldest son of Late Saikia, Gauhati High Court’s designated TADA court of Justice A Bhattacharjya ordered the CID to probe the case afresh in June 2008. But that too bore no fruit.

Meanwhile, Dhanajoy Saikia made a fresh appeal to the Gauhati High Court (4703/2017). Justice Simon Shyam directed the State Government on August 7, 2017 to submit a reply as to why no new probe was instituted during the last nine years and directed the State Police to submit a status report. Under the circumstances, the Swahid Kamala Saikia Smritirakhya Samity urged the Government to hand over the case to the CBI.
