Correspondent

AIZAWL, Sept 12 - Mizo women clad in beautiful traditional attires flocked to Sipai Lammual (Assam Rifles Ground) in large numbers to attend Siktuithiang Kut, the first-ever Mizo women festival, today.

The festival was jointly organised by Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl General Headquarters (Mizoram’s apex women body) and Art & Culture department.

Art & Culture Minister R Romawia graced the festival as chief guest. Cooperation Minister Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu, the lone woman legislator in Mizoram Assembly, attended the festival as guest of honour.

Thousands of women from 56 branches of MHIP from Aizawl took part in the day-long festival, singing and showcasing traditional dances. They also performed the spectacular Siktuithiang lam (dance). The festival is named after this dance.

Speaking at the festival, Art & Culture director R Hmingthanzuala said Siktuithiang dance originated post Christianity in Mizoram. “Even though it is much younger than the other Mizo traditional dances, it is regarded as one of the Mizo traditional dances,” he said. The festival aims to revive Mizo tradition, code of ethics, culture and unity, he added. MHIP president Saipuii said the festival also aims to inculcate our culture and tradition to our children.
