Drugs worth Rs 1.76 crore seized in NE|
GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 1,16,600 bottles of cough linctus containing codeine phosphate valued at about Rs 1.76 crore, in two separate seizures recently, a DRI press release said.With these two back-to-back seizures, the DRI has busted a major racket in smuggling of cough syrups into the North East. Cough syrups are being brought into this region for illegal export to Bangladesh, where it sells like hot cake. It is also abused in the region.
Acting on intelligence, the DRI intercepted a truck near CRPF Jeolcherra camp recently and recovered 53,600 bottles of Phensedyl cough Linctus, which were concealed under 90 bags. The bottles were seized under the provisions of NDPS Act. The total seizure value of the case is around Rs 81.33 lakh, according to the release.
Subsequently, the DRI with the assistance of BSF, intercepted another truck on the Silchar-Agartala Road and recovered 40,500 bottles of Phensedyl cough Linctus and 22,400 bottles of ESKUF Cough syrup, which were concealed in bags. The bottles were seized under the provisions of NDPS Act, 1985.
