JORHAT, Sept 12 – Expressing his desire to make the newly-established Assam Women’s University (AWU) a ‘unique’ kind of institution of higher education in the State, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi officially inaugurated the university here on Thursday afternoon.
“This will be a unique institution which will provide quality education to the girls so that they can avail employment opportunities as per the modern day requirements. We will provide all kind of necessary support ,” Gogoi said.
Stressing the need of proper education for women in the State, the Chief Minister hoped that the first women’s university in eastern India will produce students with professional and academic skills.
For the very first academic session, the university has initially included graduate and post graduate courses of various subjects like travel and tourism, mass communication, business management, information and computer science, cultural studies and fine arts, fashion design and technology, English and psychology exclusively for 65 female students.
The Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Dr KM Bujarbaruah has been authorised to look after the entire matters of the AWU as its mentor till the the first vice-chancellor is appointed while the responsibility of the chancellor has been bestowed upon Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi as per the concerned act of the university.
