MANGALDAI, Sept 12 – Much to the shock and resentment of sports lovers in the State, veteran athletes are facing tough times.

Kunja Lata Boro of village No. 1 Kacharipara near Bhakatpara, who has earned high reputation in the national level athletic meets several times, have been compelled to sell her power tiller and mortgage her agricultural land to meet her expenses for the 18th Asian Masters Athletics Championship to be held in Japan from September 19.

Similarly another Masters Athlete Reena Deka of Bokul Khat of Ward No. 7, Mangaldai Town, who has already earned laurels for the country, is also facing the same crisis.

Though both approached the State Government, Sports Department and Deputy Commissioner for financial assistance, they returned empty-handed. However Minister of State for Fisheries, Information & Public Relations Basanta Das has offered them an amount of Rs 10,000 each.
