 WOMAN, kids rescued

 RAHA, Sept 11 - Raha police rescued a 32-year-old woman and her two children, and arrested their alleged kidnapper, who was later sent to custody on Thursday after medical examination. The woman, a resident of Baruahkhat, Barapujia was missing from Tuesday. Following a complaint by her sister, police formed a team led by ASI Samarjyoti Deka of Raha PS. By tracking the mobile phone of the suspect, Rahul Amin of Lahabari, Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district, at a location under Barpetaroad PS, police rescued the woman and her children, Raha PS officer-in-charge Lakshman Kumar Das said. The woman and the children were sent to a shelter house in Nagaon. – ANN Service


SILCHAR, Sept 11 - Cachar DC Keerthi Jalli visited the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Thursday to take stock of the construction work of the 40-bed Intensive Care Unit. PWD Officer on Special Duty Jyotish Sarma accompanied the DC, who interacted with Dr Babul Bezbaruah of SMCH and Superintendent Dr Abhijit Swami and reviewed the construction in the southern block of the main building. Jalli also interacted with the contractors working on the gas pipeline at the ICU. – Staff Correspondent

Gambling racket busted

JORHAT, Sept 11 - A Jorhat police team on Thursday night raided a gambling den at Harijan Colony and apprehended seven gamblers including the kingpin Ramesh Basfor alias Posa (47). A police source said Rs 42,550 in cash and several gambling items were seized. On Wednesday, in a drive against illicit liquor, police seized 110 bottles of liquor from a house at Borholla Tiniali in Titabar subdivision of Jorhat district. – Staff Correspondent

Building demolished

JORHAT, Sept 11 - The Jorhat district administration on Thursday demolished a building beside the Na-Ali near the Railway Crossing gate under JMB ward no.11 after the building owner reportedly did not hand over the plot where the building stood to the administration following government acquisition of the land for constructing the Railway overbridge. An official source said the plot was part of several plots near the Railway Crossing gate acquired by the government by paying compensation for construction of the bridge. – Staff Correspondent

Awareness rally by scribes

NALBARI, Sept 11 - Scribes in Nalbari district on Thursday took out an awareness drive to educate people about the coronavirus pandemic. The awareness drive from Thana Chowk of Nalbari town was inaugurated by ASP Asif Ahmed. Cannabis seized

Mangaldai, Sept 11 - In a drive against illegal trading of cannabis in Darrang district, a team of police from Kharupetia Police Station recently seized around 30 kg cannabis (ganja) from the residence of one Noor Alam of Nagajan under the police station. Police booked the accused under the NDPS Act. He reportedly brought the narcotics substance from Rowta in Udalguri district. The accused was remanded to judicial custody, police sources said. – Correspondent

Hailakandi civic official

HAILAKANDI, Sept 11 - Additional Deputy Commissioner Deepmala Goala on Thursday took over charge of the executive officer of Hailakandi Municipal Board from Circle Officer Tridib Roy. Roy thanked all municipal employees and sanitation workers for enabling him to clear age-old encroachments in Herbertganj Bazaar area and also catapulting the municipality to the No.1 position in Assam in the just concluded Swachh Survekshan 2020. – Correspondent

Puja without idols

UDALGURI, Sept 11 - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Biswakarma Puja and Durga Puja will be held without idols in Udalguri district. The puja committees expressed their solidarity in this connection at a meeting with the district administration held at the police reserve recently. Nikashi Baishya, assistant commissioner and in charge of the district information and public relations office, said the puja committees agreed to conduct puja without idols and melas and maintain all health protocol. – Correspondent

Illegal saw mills busted

NAGAON, Sept 11 - Forest personnel of Nagaon Sadar range led by ranger Jayanta Goswami busted two illegal saw mills at Lotaboa and Nagabandha. Sources said these two saw mills were being run by two men – identified as Jamal Uddin and Amzad Ali. Forest personnel seized the generator sets of the illegal mills after dismantling them. – A Correspondent

PATACHARKUCHI, Sept 11 - As a mark of respect to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 94th birth anniversary, the Barpeta and Bajali units of the Congress recently felicitated 10 artistes who have made immense contributions in their respective fields. The artistes who were felicitated were Abahan Theatre producer Krishna Roy, violin artiste and music director Dipak Barua, artist Harun Ali, producer and actor Raghu Nath Malakar, actor Sanjib Sarma, Silpasarya Rajani Patgiri, sculptor Kuladhar Talukdar, dramatist and actor-director Kishor Tahbildar and Kalpa Kakati, and folk artiste Basanta Patgiri. Customer Hiring Centre

MANGALDAI, Sept 11 - Creating an opportunity for poor farmers who cannot afford modern technology-based agri-mechanized equipment or are yet to be covered by government schemes, a ‘customer hiring centre’ under the World Bank-aided programme Assam Agri Business and Rural Transformation (APART) and promoted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Darrang under Assam Agriculture University was launched at Bihudiya village near Kharupetia in Darrang district on Thursday. The centre to be run by local farmers group Annadata for a minimum of two years was launched by Darrang SP Amrit Bhuya. A brief meet was held where Dr Abdul Hafiz, head of KVK, Darrang; district agriculture officer (in-charge) Uddhab Chandra Deka, Dr Kanwar Singh and Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta of APART and BJP Darrang president Amarendra Sarma appealed to the farmers to avail this opportunity. – Correspondent
