Lathicharge on KMSS activists, 30 hurt
Correspondent
BONGAIGAON, Sept 11 – Police and paramilitary forces resorted to lathicharge on Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti members and supporters besides blank firing and shelling tear gas at Jogighopa Tiniali at around 12.30 pm today. More than 30 KMSS members and supporters were injured in the police action.

Simanta Chaudhury received injuries in police lathicharge despite revealing his press identity card. Chaudhury is a mediaperson attached to News Time Assam, a news channel. Later, police intercepted Akhil Gogoi near Naranarayan Setu at Jogighopa and tried to detain him on the pretext of checking his vehicle. But this attempt of the police failed as Gogoi possessed all the required documents of the vehicles.

The KMSS general secretary today reached Jogighopa for a peaceful demonstration against the transportation of turbines at Jogighopa ghat. But the police was ready as per the instructions of the CM. They allegedly attacked the KMSS workers without any provocation.

On the other hand, AASU members have continued their peaceful protest at Koyapati, Jogighopa. In the morning hours, the two ships carrying turbines reached the Jogighopa ghat. Entry of mediapersons to the area has been restricted without any valid reason.

The overall situation at Jogighopa after the police action has been peaceful. AASU demonstrators have been continuing their protest at the same spot under a peaceful atmosphere.
