Rich tributes paid to Dr Bhupen Hazarika

Members of Byatikram Group felicitating eminent singer Dr Sangita Kakati with ‘Dr Bhupen Hazarika Byatikram Solidarity Award 2019’ on the occasion of the legend’s 93rd birth anniversary at ARTFED auditorium, Guwahati on Sunday.
 MANGALDAI, Sept 9 - “Bhupen Hazarika made three mistakes in life. First, he didn’t translate his compositions into English, second he didn’t sing his songs in English and third he didn’t return to America from India once he had left it. If these three mistakes were not committed by Dr Bhupen Hazarika, then the whole world would have been Bhupenised,” quoting the famous American artiste Bob Dilon, Dr Mahesh Deka, a veteran cultural activist who is stated to have translated around 100 songs of Bhupen Hazarika into English, said on Sunday. He was inaugurating the cultural evening of the daylong celebration of the 93rd birth anniversary of the Bharat Ratna at the Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Park along river Bega on Sunday.

Dr Deka, in his inaugural speech, tried to throw light on the impressions in the minds of all time great artistes of the western nations on Bhupen Hazarika’s musical life. The cultural evening anchored by Abdul Rauf Ahmed, assistant secretary of the organization, namely ‘Bhupen Hazarika Smriti Raksha Committee,’ witnessed solo performances by more than 20 local veteran and young artistes including Dwijendra Mohan Deba Sarma, Anwesha Goswami, Inamul Haque, Tutu Hazarika, Bharati Saharia, Kalpana Deka, Chandra Sekhar Roy etc., besides a group dance by artistes of Youth Club Music College, among others.

Earlier the programme began with the chorus Aah Aah Olai Aah..Xajag Janata presented by the office bearers of the organizing committee. The celebration also featured several other programmes.

Several prominent persons including Gurujyoti Das, Mangaldai legislator and president of the organizing committee, Ghanshyam Dass, DC, Darrang, Tulsi Saikia, cultural pensioner and veteran actor, Kulen Hazarika, prominent social activist and donor of the bust and Nilima Debi, president, BJP, Darrang unit apart from a large number of local people of Mangaldai, where Bhupen Hazarika had spent a couple of memorable years of his childhood days, attended the celebration.

Our Correspondent from Dhubri adds: On the occasion of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth anniversary, a sradhanjali programme, along with a cultural event, was organized at Rajib Gandhi park on Sunday evening to pay tributes to the bard.

The programme was organized by the Rajiv Gandhi Children’s Park Nirman Committee which was attended by many senior citizens of the district including ADC Animesh Talukdar and educationist Girindranath Goswami and host of other dignitaries. The programme was made colourful by performances by different artistes from all over the district, who performed different forms of traditional dances and sang songs of the maestro.
