Naga body opposes illegal taxation in the name of nationalism

DIMAPUR, Sept 9 - The Public Action Committee (PAC) of the Naga Council Dimapur has vowed to stop all kinds of illegal taxation by groups in the name of Naga nationalism.

Miffed at the rampant collection of illegal tax by many Naga political groups, the PAC organised a consultative meeting with representatives of tribal women hohos and student leaders at Tourist Lodge here on Saturday.

After a lengthy deliberation, the PAC asserted that it will not remain a silent spectator anymore but initiate measures to check the illegal collection of money at all checkpoints and selected places where Naga political groups are known to collect money.

PAC convener Vekhosayi Nyekha spoke about the problem of multiple taxation, and said the prices of commodities in the state have skyrocketed and become unsustainable. “We will stop and clean up this system,” he asserted.

Nyekha said the PAC, by putting a stop to illegal collections, will help reduce prices of commodities. “In case, it does not result in price reduction, we will look into the business community,” he added.

The PAC made its stand clear that it was not against ceasefire by the various groups with the Government of India but that the groups have been taking advantage of the relative peace and normalcy to expand their taxation activities.

In this regard, the PAC said it would, with support from its 19 constituent tribal organisations, gather around 40-50 volunteers and depute them at all checkgates, and brick kilns in and around Dimapur, to tackle the rampant illegal tax collection. The PAC also said multiple government agencies, including police, were collecting tax at checkgates and that it would not allow such collections any more.
