GUWAHATI, Sept 8 – In a bid to showcase the multi-faceted genius of Assam’s 15th-century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardev before a wider audience, Trend MMS with active support from Assam Association, Delhi and in collaboration with the Ministry of DoNER, the Ministry of Culture, and the Assam Government, is organizing a an event in New Delhi on September 13.
The programme will be held at the Kamini Auditorium from 7 pm.
Actor Victor Banerjee who spent his formative years in upper Assam is the brand ambassador for the programme and he would also host the function. Filmmaker Jahnu Barua, and singers Zubin Garg and Joy Baruah are also involved as brand associates.
The organizers have termed it a “pioneering effort called Srimanta Sankaradev Movement, Delhi Initiatives”, and asserted that it would be a sustainable endeavour.
The organizers revealed that attempts were being made to include a chapter on Sankaradev in the NCERT course curriculum. Efforts were also being directed at popularizing the components of Sankari culture such as Sattriya dance, Ankia Bhaona, Jhumura and various platforms of Sangeet Natak Academy and National Schools of Drama.
The programme would comprise an audio-visual documentary on Sankaradev followed by a one-hour thematic performance of a dance-drama, Chordhora Jhumura. Jhumura is a unique creation of Mahapurush Madhabdev, the prime disciple of Sankaradev, Jhumura reminisces of Broadway Theatre of the West and it represents the creations of Sankaradev like Sattriya Nritya and Geet.
The documentary is directed by filmmaker Sanjib Sabhapandit and the dance drama by Dr Nirupoma Mahanta. National Schools of Drama (NSD) is providing technical support for organizing the drama. A Facebook page – Srimanta Sankaradev Movement Delhi Initiative -- has been created for the event.
The dignitaries for the function include, among others, Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, former Assam Governor SK Sinha, Gyanpith Award winner K Satchidananda, and academician Dr Sunil Kothari.
Leading Sankari organizations of the State such as Assam Sattra Mahasabha, Srimanta Sankaradev Sangha, and Ek Saran Bhagawati Dharma are associated with the event and would be represented by Lila Mahanta, president, Assam Sattra Mahasabha, Hariprasad Hazarika, secretary general, Sankardev Sangha, and Doyal Krishna Bora, president, Ek Saran Bhagawati Dharma as special guests.
The programme would also be attended by leading dance exponents of various dance forms, drama critics, Sangeet Natak Academy officials and members, bureaucrats, leading educationists of Delhi, etc.
