GUWAHATI, Sept 7 – The Gauhati High Court today directed the State Government to hold elections of the Mising Autonomous Council within six months.
The court has also asked the Chief Secretary, the North Assam Commissioner and the Commissioner, Welfare of Plains Tribe and Backward Classes to initiate necessary steps to facilitate holding of elections of the council within the stipulated period.
The Mising Autonomous Council, constituted by the Assam Government by enacting an Act in the Legislative Assembly in 1995, was run by an adhoc interim council constituted under Sec 80 of the Mising Autonomous Council Act, till 30 June, 2009.
Since July 1, 2009, no interim council was constituted and the Deputy Commissioner of Dhemaji and the Commissioner North Assam Division were appointed as administrators to run the affairs of the council.
Advocate Manas Sarania, who was assisted by advocates Sarifuddin Ahmed and M Devi appeared on behalf of Lakhinath Panging, the former chief executive councilor of the ad hoc interim Mising Autonomous Council, said that the court passed the judgement keeping in view the welfare of the people under the council who want the elections to take place.
