Heikru Hidongba fest observed in Manipur

 IMPHAL, Sept 2 - The 239th Heikru Hidongba festival was observed in Manipur on Saturday. The festival is organised on the 11th day of the Manipuri calendar month ‘Langban’ to bring prosperity to the community.

Thousands of people thronged the Bijoygobinda Moat at Sagolband in Imphal West district this afternoon to witness a boat race organised as part of the traditional ‘Heikru Hidongba’ festival.

Religious rituals were performed to predict the fortune of the State in the days to come, besides paying obeisance to God for bountiful blessings in the year gone by.

Girls rescued: Anti Human Trafficking Unit, Churachandpur along with a team of women police rescued three girls including one minor who were reportedly being trafficked to South East Asia along Moreh-Rangoon Road on Saturday, according to police. The incident took place in the wee hours today.

As per the modus operandi of the traffickers, the girls are lured into jobs and kept at a “clandestine place” in Rangoon. They are then segregated into two groups as per their looks and trained in skills such as massage, household works, etc., the source said.

The police seized the vehicle, besides arresting three traffickers including the main agent Esther Lalpianmawii of Churachandpur. She admitted to have transported many girls in the past as well. The other two arrested are Lalganihawami and Lunkhosat Haokip of Churachandpur.

A case has been registered in women police station at Churachandpur, the source informed.
