TE doctor dies following attack by workers

 JORHAT, Aug 31 - A doctor of Teok Tea Estate under Teok Police Station, Dr Deben Dutta (73), succumbed to his injuries this evening, following an attack on him by a mob of workers reportedly of the garden, in the late afternoon today.

A police source said that as per preliminary report, a large group of people gathered at the garden hospital at around 3 pm, after finding Dr Dutta reportedly not present in the hospital when a worker Somra Majhi – stated to be seriously injured in an accident – was brought to the hospital for treatment.

The source said that the doctor arrived sometime later at the hospital but till then Majhi had already died. The mob got enraged and physically assaulted the doctor and also the welfare officer of the estate Jiban Kurmi.

Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Roshni Korati told The Assam Tribune tonight that a police team, accompanied by an Executive Magistrate rushed to the spot after getting information and rescued the duo.

Korati said that Dr Dutta later died at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital while Kurmi sustained minor injuries and required no hospitalisation.

The Deputy Commissioner said that she has ordered a magisterial inquiry and has directed Additional Deputy Commissioner Subhan Gowala to probe the incident and submit the report within 7 days. Korati said that police personnel have been deployed adequately in the garden to prevent any kind of untoward incidents.
