Dibrugarh bar body chief denies assault on wife
Staff Correspondent
DIBRUGARH, Oct 28 – Biman Baruah, president of the Bar Association here who has been slapped with charges of violence on his wife today denied the charges, stating that all allegations were baseless and concocted driven by an unterior motive. Baruah’s wife, Dr Tultul Baruah, now under treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital is the former head of the Anthropology department of DHSK College here.

Refuting media reports, the Bar Association chief said that the charges levelled against him are not of his wife but of two sisters of his wife – advocate Basana Rajkhowa and Arul Saikia of Guwahati. As disclosed to mediapersons here today, Baruah said that the two sisters of Dr Tultul Baruah have been conspiring to possess his properties. “It was the sisters of my wife who lodged complaint with the police in the name of my wife,” he said.

“The case was lodged against me only when I refused to give away my Ford Fiesta vehicle and declined to transfer the ownership of my flats to them. Basana Rajkhowa has been pestering me to transfer the properties for last four months,” he said. Baruah has one flat at Beltola (Survey) and another at Bamunimaidan in Guwahati. He also has two vehicles. The Bar Association chief and Dr Tultul Baruha do not have children but have adopted a girl child.

Biman Baruah further said that he was willing to give the vehicle to his wife but not to her sisters. The vehicle, however is registered in the name of Dr Tultul Baruah. “In my last 25 years of union with my wife, we have never indulged in quarrel and how can I beat her up at this old age,” he questioned. “The mark near the left eye of my wife, shown through media is the scar of the eye operation she underwent at Nethralaya, Guwahati and the mark is not of any assault,” Biman Baruah claimed. “Moreover my wife is a psychiatric patient and is bed-ridden for last several months. Under such a situation how can one expect a fight between us,” he asked.

He further said that the sisters of his wife who were in Dibrugarh on October 23 opened lockers and took away Rs 25,000, a gold ring and a gold chain, besides documents of all his properties before carrying away Dr Tultul Baruah to Guwahati. “Even now, the two sisters are seeking to grab my property by humiliating me through false allegations”, he said. The Bar Association chief has already lodged a complaint with the police in this regard.
