GUWAHATI, Oct 27 - RAISED, a city-based NGO, distributed 5,000 earthen lamps among the general public, urging the latter to light earthen lamps in their homes this Diwali.
The NGO distributed earthen lamps at localities like Ulubari and Ganeshguri and sought cooperation from the public in spreading awareness about the benefits of using earthen lamps.
The earthen lamps were distributed in cloth bags manufactured by the organisation.
The initiative was inaugurated by Guwahati MP Queen Ojha.
Phanindranath Sharma, president of the organisation, stated that by making people aware of the use of earthen lamps, employment opportunities can be generated.
Later in the evening, members of the NGO distributed sweets at the campus of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Education Minister Siddartha Bhattacharya was also present on the occasion, among others.
