Science Society for execution of SC order on fireworks

GUWAHATI, Oct 25 - Assam Science Society, a leading voluntary organisation engaged in popularising science and scientific temperament, has appealed to the district and police authorities as well as the Pollution Control Board, Assam, to execute, during Diwali this time, the October 23, 2018 Supreme Court order banning the use of fireworks that cause noise and air pollution.

Members of the Society have approached the responsible officials of the district and police administrations with the appeal to effectively ban the bursting of high-decibel crackers and the use of air-polluting fireworks.

In a press release here today, the Society also appealed to the people to celebrate Diwali as a festival of light and not indulge in bursting of crackers and burning of fireworks that cause noise and air pollution, which, with the severe and cumulative adverse impacts on the environment, ultimately pose threats to all living beings.

The Society has launched a drive to generate awareness among the public, particularly among students, about the issue and has joined hands also with six other NGOs that have been working in the areas of popularising science and generating awareness about environment-related issues.

The Society, together with these NGOs, has brought out a leaflet to generate awareness about the gravity of these issues. Copies of the leaflet have been extensively distributed, it said.
