GOALPARA, Oct 20 – The Rabha Hajong Joint Movement Committee (RHJMC), an umbrella of 34 organisations including the political parties and some local organisations have welcome the poll dates announcement by the Assam Election Commission and thanked the Government’s decision for holding 3 phase polling for the Rabha Hajong Autonomous Council scheduled on November 13, 16 and 25 respectively.
While talking to this correspondent over phone, Tankeswar Rabha, chief convenor RHJMC and president of All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) who hailed the decision said that this is a momentous occasion for all the people living in the Rabha Hajong area and despite their 17 long years of arduous struggle the people will finally be politically empowered to fulfill their own aspirations and take on the democratic process to the grassroots level so that common people can participate in the decision making process for realising their socio- economic development.
He also appealed to all sections of people for maintaining a healthy and peaceful atmosphere in the RHAC areas for free and fair polls and also urged all the political parties to recognise and value the sacrifices and support the candidature of all the aspiring candidates who have taken active part in the Rabha Hajong Movement.
Moreover, Alhaj Abdur Rashid Mondal, president, District Congress Committee also hailed the Government decision for holding the RHAC elections as this will usher in a new era of peace and development in these areas and maintained that all disputes arising out of the delimitation process either for inclusion or exclusion of particular areas or villages may be amicably settled between the aggrieved parties or the process of delimitation of these constituencies may be carried out afresh even after the elections or these areas be left out till a final settlement is reached.
Mondal also castigated the AIUDF party and said that it does not have any specific policy and maintained a stoic silence on this issue neither supporting nor opposing the RHAC elections and blamed them for playing the partisan political sentiment of the people by highlighting the negative issues.
According to the time schedule which has been drawn up in this regard vide notification number TAD/BC/135/2005/135 Dated 23.11.2013 the nomination papers will be accepted in the office of the deputy commissioner between 11 am to 3 pm on all working days whereas the poll hours have been fixed between 7 am and 3 pm on the date of polls.
