GUWAHATI, Oct 18 - Eight inmates of the Guwahati Central Jail have been staging a hunger strike for the last five days in protest against various irregularities allegedly taking place inside the jail premises.
Informing about the hunger strike, Biran Kumar Lahkar, a resident of the city, whose son Chinmoy Lahkar is also a member of the group of inmates, said that the protesters are demanding pure drinking water, food and other facilities in accordance with the COVID-19 norms.
Lahkar also said that on October 8, a clash had erupted between two groups of inmates inside the jail, in which his son received serious injuries and lost his consciousness.
However, the jailor of Guwahati Central Jail, Ranjit Burhagohain, when contacted, denied that any such protest is going on inside the jail premises.
