Govt to digitalise vaccine inventories
Correspondent
MANGALDAI, Oct 18 - The conventional method of using pen and paper to keep records of the stock position of vaccines at the remotest cold chain centre under the State Health Department is on the way out. This old practice will soon be replaced by a new information technology-based application which aims at providing real time information on vaccine stocks and flows and also storage temperatures across all cold chain points in Assam. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is reportedly rolling out this new innovative application called electronic vaccine intelligence network or e-VIN in short across all districts of the State to support the Government of India’s Universal Immunisation Programme. The new smart phone and internet-based application implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is expected to resolve the widespread inequities in vaccine coverage by supporting the State Government in overcoming constraints of infrastructure, monitoring and managing information systems and human resources, often resulting in over stocking and stocking out of vaccines in storage centres.

As a part of this initiative, a two-daylong training programme for the cold chain handlers of the district Health Department was organised here recently. On the occasion, a ceremonial distribution of mobile smart phones was organised where the chief guest Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Health), Darrang distributed hand sets to all 34 participating ANM and GNMs in the presence of senior officials of the district Health Department including Utpal Kr Das, Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer, Darrang, Dr AK Dhing, District Immunisation Officer, Dr Nirmal Ch Beria, Sub-divisional Medical & Health Officer (Public Health), Mangaldai and Dr Chiranjeeb Bhattacharjya, State Project Officer, UNDP, Assam among others.

Earlier the training programme was inaugurated by Dr Ramesh Ch Goswami, In-charge Joint Director of Health Services, Darrang.
