DIBRUGARH, Oct 17 - The 120th birth anniversary of ‘Singhapurush’ Radha Govinda Baruah was observed here today at a toned down function due to Covid-19 situation. Floral tributes were offered at his bust at the Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaroa Park here under the auspices of the Dibrugarh RG Baruah Memorial Committee.

Speaking on the occasion, the secretary of the committee, Ron Duarah, who is also The Assam Tribune's Dibrugarh Edition operational head, recalled the pioneering initiatives by RG, whose entrepreneurship saw the establishment of the first branch of the then Imperial Bank here in the early 20th century. This bank has since become the State Bank of India. That was the first major bank branch anywhere in the northeast. RG’s role as a sports and cultural organiser were recalled by Dipom Baruah, a political activist here.

Earlier, social worker Anita Das lit the ceremonial lamp to signal the beginning of the function. Duarah thanked the maintenance team of the park, led by Jaikishan Tiwari, for keeping the statue and its surroundings nice and clean throughout the year. The vote of thanks at the end of the function was offered by this newspaper’s staff reporter, Pores Aind.
