|Mahila Kisan Divas observed in Dibrugarh|
DIBRUGARH, Oct 16 - Krishi Vigyan Kendra here facilitated celebration of Mahila Kisan Divas at nearby Banipur with a day-long programme where women farmers were encouraged for playing a crucial role in agricultural development, food security and household management.
The progressive women farmers were motivated to hone their skills for enhanced production, robust marketing and better management etc. Supriyo Sonowal, expert in Tea Husbandry and Technology, Sanghamitra Sarma, an expert in Entomology and Hemchandra Saikia, an expert in Agricultural Economics of Krishi Vigyan Kendra were the key resource persons for the day’s event.
Supriya Sonowal spoke about various opportunities on capacity building and training programmes for skill development, which women can avail for their empowerment. Sanghamitra Sarma attended to the queries raised by the attending women farmers in carrying out various agricultural activities like insect problem in vegetable crops and flowers etc.
Hemchandra Saikia spoke on upgrading skills. He asked the women to be well equipped with knowledge and expertise for producing profitable and market-oriented value-added produce having huge consumer demand in both local and foreign markets as at present there is no barrier in free trade and, hence, urged them to take the advantage of market liberalization. He also emphasized in the production, marketing and processing of all Assamese traditional food items having high nutritional value by maintaining quality. He suggested women to go for organized form of economic activities like forming effective Self-Help Groups and later forming Farmers’ Producer Organization.
Saikia also urged the women to lay emphasis on habituating a balanced diet by all family members, stating that for all sorts of peace, progress and prosperity, sound health is the key.
