Fledgling AJP steps up membership drive
Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - Stepping up its membership drive through the launch of an online membership portal today, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is going to launch its youth wing on October 16, followed by formation of two separate wings of women and SC/ST.

Interested persons, including those Assamese people living outside the State can join the AJP and support its cause through the website, chief convenor of AJP Dr KG Bhattacharya told mediapersons here.

Refraining from commenting on the rumours of a rift in the AASU’s top leadership over formation of AJP, the party’s coordinator Jagadish Bhuyan stated that it was the internal matter of AASU.

“So far the formation of the AJP is concerned, it is the outcome of the recommendations of Assam Paramarshdata Committee, which was formed through a unanimous decision of the AASU and AJYCP leadership,” Bhuyan said.

The party leaders also stated that the organisational work of AJP is going on full swing and the work of its constituency-level committees would be completed by October 30. This will be followed by formation of booth-level committees by December 10.

Amid talks of a possible alliance between the AJP and KMSS-backed Raijor Dal, the AJP said that it is all for a greater understanding in the regional camp so that the candidates of regional parties get undivided support in each constituency.

“Since its inception, the party has been making its stand clear about a united fight by the regional parties, keeping equidistance from the national as well as communal parties. The final decision regarding the matter will be taken up after formation of the State-level committee,” party leader Adip Phukan stated.

The party also announced the names of some more AJP convenors including Niren Sarma, Partha Pratim Bezbarua, Chandra Prakash Sarma Khandelwal, Siddhartha Sarkar and Rafel Kuzur.
