|Rathong glacier dynamics study conducted |
GANGTOK, Oct 14 – A glacier study team consisting of Assistant Scientific Officer Narpati Sharma and Project Scientists RK Sharma, Pranay Pradhan and Dilliram Chettri of Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology working for Glacier Dynamics of Sikkim, has completed an expedition to East Rathong Glacier in West Sikkim. The main objectives of the study relates to the study of glacier velocity, snout monitoring, glacier melt water runoff of Rathong glacier.
East Rathong is a valley glacier starting from an elevation of 4,600 metres and it is 5.12 km long.
The State Council of Science and Technology shall establish a pre fabricated hut, install Automatic Weather Station (AWS) to enable long term stay of the research team for indepth study of the glacier dynamics.
