GUWAHATI, Oct 14 – The DVD of the famous Assamese film Maniram Dewan, based on the life of the 1857-rebellion martyr Maniram Dewan, is now available in the market. According to the family sources of the late Apurba Choudhury, the producer of the film, the DVDs of the film were available at the Guwahati Book Fair stalls of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and the Satirtha held recently. DVDs of the film are also available at the Pan Bazar showroom of the Bharali Brothers.
The film made in 1963 had won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Regional Film in Assamese the next year. it was directed by the late Sarbeswar Chakravorty and late Dr Bhupen Hazarika scored its music. He was assisted by his brother late Jayanta Hazarika. Famous Bengali actor Utpal Dutta played the role of Holoryod in the film.
It was the first Assamese film which had five prints. It was probably the first Assamese film that was telecast by the Doordarshan Kendra of New Delhi in 1983. It was re-telecast by the Doordarshan Kendra with the English subtitles prepared by late Apurba Choudhury, who was basically a tea planter. Choudhury also had the experience of working in AIR Guwahati station. In the late 1950s, he worked in AIR Guwahati station for a brief period.
The DVD format of the film was released by noted film critic Apurba Sarma at a function held here on October 10 on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the late Choudhury.
The function organised by the Apurba Kumar Choudhury Smriti Raksha Samity, was presided over by noted actor Dilip Kumar Hazarika, who played the role of Piyali Barua in the film and on whose lips the famous Bhupen Hazarika number Buku Homhom Kore was picturised. Noted singer Sudakshina Sarma also addressed the function, besides film critic Chandan Sarma and Choudhury’s brother Dipu Choudhury, a well known sports personality of the State.
