GUWAHATI, Oct 13 - Bhaben Patowary, a 56-year-old flower vendor, died in a road accident at Machkhowa area of the city at around 4.30 am today.

Five others, including two flower vendors, sustained serious injuries when a Maruti Alto car rammed into a stationary Tata Magic share taxi on MG Road in front of the flower market at Machkhowa, said Dhirendra Barman, a traffic police official of the Bharalumukh Police Station.

Bhaben Patowary, along with two other flower vendors, Kandarpa Patowary and Babul Ali, and three passengers of the car, Subol Pradhani, Mithun Pradhani and Mintal Pradhani, sustained grievous injuries and were rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Bhaben Patowary, however, was declared brought death by doctors.

Dhirendra Barman said the flower vendors are from Hajo in Kamrup district, while the passengers of the car had come to the city from Gossaigaon in Kokrajhar district for treatment at the GMCH.

“The car (AS 01 DR 4406) hit the Magic share taxi (AS 25 BC 2245) when the flower vendors were unloading their goods. The cause of the accident is not yet known as we have not been able to speak to the driver of the car since he is undergoing treatment at the hospital,” Barman said.
