TURA, Oct 12 - Policemen from the Dainadubi outpost in North Garo Hills seized a pick-up van laden with illegally timber on Friday. The vehicle was on its way to Assam.
The police later handed over the vehicle, along with the seized timber, to the State Forest Office at Dainadubi.
According to sources, the estimated value of the timber would be more than Rs 2 lakh.
Meanwhile, sources said that more logs, which appear to have been felled recently, were seen piled up in a forest near Dingre Abri.
Significantly, a Forest beat office is located close to the spot where the high-value trees are being illegally felled.
Local NGOs, including the GSU, FKJGP, AAYF, ADE, have been demanding strict action against the timber smugglers.
