4 NE states make presentation before House panel

 NEW DELHI, Oct 12 - Four northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura have made presentations before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019 on Thursday.

The Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha on February 6 by the then Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The Bill seeks to amend provisions related to the Finance Commission and the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The Sixth Schedule relates to the administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

Official sources here said that the chief secretaries of the four states along with officials, including those from the Ministry of Home Affairs, made their presentation before the parliamentary panel which is headed by Congress MP Anand Sharma.

“The committee heard chief secretaries and representatives of the state governments of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura on the Constitution (125th Amendment) Bill, 2019. Senior officers of the Ministry of Home Affairs were also present in the meeting. The Bill seeks to devolution of powers to the Sixth Schedule autonomous councils of these states.
