JORHAT, Oct 12 - The Majuli Deputy Commissioner PG Jha on Wednesday inaugurated a two-day orientation programme on ‘Safe Water and Health’ at the conference hall of the Majuli DC’s office.
The programme was organised by the Safe Water Centre for Healthy Assam (SWCHA), Arsenic Knowledge and Action Network and Piramal Swasthya Management and Research Institute in collaboration with the Majuli district administration.
Experts on the subject of arsenic contamination from Kolkata, Guwahati and Jorhat took part as resource persons on the inaugural day session on Wednesday.
Dr KK Majumdar from KPC Medical College, Kolkata spoke on the topic, ‘Identification of Health Effects of Arsenic: A Health Perspective’, and made a power-point presentation on the diseases caused by arsenic contaminated water and their symptoms.
Dr RL Goswami of CISR-NEIST, Jorhat spoke on the topic, ‘Arsenic and Water Quality in Assam : A Technology Perspective.’
The third resource person, Professor (Dr) Mamata Goswami from Cotton College, Guwahati, made a presentation on ‘Experiences from the Field in Assam: A Community Perspective.’ Health department officials and representatives from several NGOs attended the programme.
