Concern over NFR decision on heritage line
Correspondent
HAFLONG, Oct 12 – Serious concern has been expressed by the conscious citizens of Dima Hasao over the sudden decision of the NFR authority against implementation of the ‘Heritage line’ project from Mahur to Harangajao.

It is learnt that the NF Railway was planning to implement the Mahur-Harangajao heritage line project and some preliminary work was also carried out, like changing of the steel channel of the bridges etc. But the sudden decision not to implement the project in the name Mega Block or whatsoever, has recently drawn criticism from many corners.

The 50-km Mahur-Harangajao stretch was not disturbed by the new BG alignment since the new BG line passes from Migrengdisa to Harangajao by avoiding this stretch, and for this the NF Railway was planning to keep this stretch as a heritage line for which the NF Railways was appreciated by the conscious people.

Subimal Bhattacharjee, member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance, who was here at Haflong to attend the first alumni meet of Don Bosco, Haflong, while talking to this correspondent expressed serious concern over the sudden decision of the NF Railways not to implement the heritage line project, which has great heritage value not only in terms of tourism, but also the engineering marvel of this scenic 110-year-old railway line with tunnels and bridges is simply breathtaking, he justified. Perhaps, if this project is implemented, it may be the only MG track remaining in the country. He observed that the lack of coordination among the different departments of NF Railway was the prime cause of such a weird decision.

He also expressed concern on seeing the MG trains with engines lying at Lower Haflong Station, uncared and unattended. He said Railway property like bogies, wagons and engines worth crores of rupees was lying at Lower Haflong Station, which proves lack of coordination among the different NFR departments. He disclosed that he would soon approach the Union Railway Minister in Delhi on the matter of the heritage line.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Member of NC Hills Autonomous Council, Debojeet Thaosen has been approaching the Railway Ministry and others to retain the project in Dima Hasao district.
