GUWAHATI, Oct 12 – Like everything else under the sun, the celebration of the traditional Durga Puja too has witnessed radical changes over the years -- be it in the decorative or the thematic aspect.
This year along with the rest of the State where Durga Puja will present the pandal hoppers an opportunity to get the best view of design and aesthetic wonder, the capital city will also give a glimpse into some unique thematic design this festive season and many commendably revolving around environment conservation.
According to Gautam Dutta of Ecotourism Society of North East India Guwahati has come up with a lot of theme based Durga Pujas this year. It needs to be mentioned here that the society in a bid to generate awareness about the environment is holding a competition amongst the different puja committees in the city and the committee that follows the norms of environment conservation will be awarded.
Sharing some of the society's experiences during interaction with the puja committees, Dutta said that most of the puja committees are showing keen interest to ensure that the environment is not harmed during the celebration. Nabin Sangha of Rehabari selected rural life as their theme. The puja committee will showcase the village life and traditional culture of India so that the visitors can get a view of rural life.
The club claimed that it always ensures the proper disposal of garbage and every year makes proper arrangement for dustbin, pure drinking water, fire extinguisher etc. The puja was established in the year 1959.
Lions Boys Club of Guwahati, Kalapahar Durga puja committee will have mountains and hills as theme.
Shantipur Swiss gate Durga Puja Committee has always fascinated the visitors with the lighting and the pandal decoration. This time they have taken Titanic as the theme and interestingly the entire pandal will be having centralized air condition facility. They will show the nine different faces of Maa Durga through lighting which will be arranged in the tanks within the Pragjyotish college campus.
Maidan Beltola Lakhi Nandir Durga Puja Committee established in 1969 has taken as theme an old temple where they will be show case the traditional sculpture of India.
Bamunimaidan Kalibari Durga Puja committee started their Durga Puja celebration way back in the year 1969. Last year their theme was the Great Wall of China. This year they are constructing a 30 thousand year old Egyptian temple. There will be live mechanical movement of the idol. The idol has been constructed by the artists from Kolkata. The Bamunimaidan Puja committee is very much hopeful for getting the best idol award in Guwahati.
Lachitnagar Sarbojanin Durgutsav will be entering into its 43rd year. They will showcase the artificial flood of Guwahati.
