GUWAHATI, Oct 12 – Amid elaborate preparations, security arrangements in and around Guwahati has been beefed up in view of the ensuing Durga Puja.

Though there is no specific threat perception, security agencies are consistently reviewing the security arrangements across the city, especially in and around puja pandals and crowded areas.

Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Pradeep Chandra Saloi while elaborating on the arrangements from the security point of view told this reporter that all the police stations have been put on alert and asked to monitor the situation on regular intervals.

The senior police officer informed that the police department had already discussed the security plans with the puja organizing committees, who have been strictly asked to adhere to the prescribed rules set in view of security concerns.

This year, around 400 puja pandals have been set up in and around the city.

“Of others directions, all the puja committees have been asked to install close-circuit television cameras at strategic locations, entry and exit points to be specific,” informed Saloi.

“As far as deployment of security personnel is concerned, they have been positioned as per the vulnerability of the area. The security personnel would be assisted by the volunteers to be engaged by the respective committees,” he said.

He went on to divulge that like previous years, this year too, the department has decided to deploy spotters to keep rowdy elements at bay.

Questioned on late night surveillance, Saloi stated that special team of police would do round-the-clock patrolling in both two-wheelers and four wheelers, as per requirements.

Meanwhile, sources in the district administration informed that the men-in-uniform have been specifically asked to take steps to streamline the movement of the vehicular traffic during the puja days, especially near the pandals.
