GUWAHATI, Oct 11 - A supari killer, also wanted in several criminal cases in the Noonmati area, was finally caught by police after a sustained hunt.
Moinul Haque (50) alias Sardar alias Lambu was arrested from Jaleshwar in Goalpara yesterday, a day after police received information about his presence there.
Originally from Goalpara, Moinul had been living at Narengi and was involved in a number of thefts and other crimes, ACP (Noonmati) Purabi Mazumdar told The Assam Tribune.
On July 24 last, he had attempted to kill a woman, Deepika Barman at Govardhan, Chandrapur under Pragjyotishpur Police Station.
“He was hired by Deepika’s husband for Rs 7,000. Deepika’s husband Bijoy Barman had been torturing her over dowry demands since their marriage about six years back,” the ACP said.
On July 24, Bijoy asked Deepika to accompany him to his sister’s place on a motorcycle. When they reached the Kolong river at Govardhan, Bijoy manoeuvred a pre-planned accident. “When Deepika fell down, he signalled to Moinul, who was following them in a vehicle. Moinul threw Deepika into the river. It was around 9.30 at night. However, an alert boatman who was present there saved Deepika from drowning,” Mazumdar revealed.
Police immediately rushed to the place and arrested Bijoy, but Moinul had fled in the meantime. He had been absconding since then and was reportedly hiding at places in Dhubri and Goalpara.
“We had engaged several sources to track him. And finally we could nab him yesterday,” ACP Mazumdar said.
Moinul has been booked under sections of 120 (b), 498, 307 and 34 of the IPC. He was today produced in a court and taken into three days’ police remand.
