|DGP reviews security measures for Khonsa West bypoll|
ITANAGAR, Oct 10 - Arunachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) RP Upadhyaya today visited Khonsa, the headquarters of Tirap district, to take stock of the law-and-order situation and security arrangements being made in view of the forthcoming by-election to the Khonsa West Assembly constituency.
During the visit, the DGP gave a briefing to all officers deployed for poll duty and boosted their morale. The briefing was followed by a closed-door meeting with IB officials.
On Friday, the DGP will interact with senior Army and paramilitary forces officers to review the security scenario in the TLC region with special focus on the Khonsa bypoll. He will interact with both the contesting candidates and gaon burahs, followed by visits to the polling stations. Two Independent candidates – Chakat Aboh and Azet Homtok – are in the fray for the Khonsa West by-election, which is scheduled to be held on October 21.
Chakat Aboh, widow of slain National People’s Party leader Tirong Aboh, is being backed by five major political parties, including the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress.
The by-election to the Khonsa West seat was necessitated after sitting MLA Tirong Aboh, who sought re-election in the April 11 Assembly polls on an NPP ticket, was gunned down by suspected NSCN militants near Bogapani village in Tirap district on May 21, two days before the poll results.
