 Dr Ranjit Deka joins AGP

 Patacharkuchi, Oct 7 - Dr Ranjit Deka, the Rector-cum-Principal of the Anundoram Borooah Academy, one of the leading private educational institutions of Pathsala, joined the AGP formally at its head office at Ambari in Guwahati today. Patacharkuchi LAC is one of the strongholds of the regional party. Speculations are rife that he will be given ticket in the constituency this time from the party. Last year, Pabindra Deka had contested in the seat on the AGP ticket. Today, Dr Deka went to Guwahati with more than thousand supporters and well-wishers and arrived at the party office of AGP, where he was warmly received. Dr Deka said that he wants to strengthen the regional party in the State. AGP leaders Atul Borah, Phani Bhushan Choudhury, Keshab Mahanta among others delivered speeches while welcoming Dr Ranjit Deka to the party fold. – ANN Service

Murder accused held with pistol

NAGAON, Oct 7 - A Nagaon special operational team led by Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Mohan Lal Meena (IPS) arrested the prime accused of the gruesome murder of one Nabi Hussain from No. 2 Langiagaon of Dhupoguri early this morning while he was hiding there. Police seized a 7.65 mm pistol and two rounds of live ammunition from his possession. The arrested person has been identified as Anarul Islam who was absconding for over a fortnight after allegedly killing Nabi Hussain. Sources claimed that Anarul along with his two brothers – Dildar Hussain and Nasirul Islam – on September 25 had gone to Nabi Hussain’s residence and asked as well as proposed that the latter’s minor daughter marry his younger brother Nasirul Islam. When Nabi Hussain refused the proposal, an infuriated, Anarul fired at Nabi with his illegal pistol and fled from the scene. Subsequently, Nabi succumbed to his injuries on spot after a while. Police personnel from Dhing PS as well as SOT, in quest of Anarul Islam raided several of his hideouts and finally got a breakthrough early this morning. – Correspondent

Escaped undertrial nabbed

Morigaon, Oct 7 - In a major breakthrough, Morigaon Police managed to apprehend a dreaded criminal – Rashidul Islam alias Gongu – who had fled from jail custody on October 2. Rashidul was arrested in connection with the murder case 15/ 2000 of Mayong PS and he was in Morigaon jail custody. Gongu and his accomplices had allegedly murdered a leading businessman of Guwahati, Bhaskar Neog, 10 years ago. Dr Nanda Sing Borkala, SP, Morigaon briefing mediapersons today, said that the dreaded criminal fled from Morigaon Civil Hospital on the night of October 2. Two constables who were guarding the criminals were suspended from service on charges of dereliction of duty. After fleeing, Rashidul took shelter at Goukhuti char on Darrang-Morigaon border. Last night police and security personnel raiding the area managed to arrest him, the SP added. Apart from the Bhaskar Neog murder case, Gongu was also involved in many dacoities and poaching cases of Morigaon and Darrang districts. – Correspondent

PDS rice recovered, 1 held

Dhubri, Oct 7 - Around 200 quintals of illegally stocked rice meant for PDS was recovered by Dhubri Police from Alamganj area in the wee hours of Tuesday and one Sahanur Alom has been arrested in this regard. Police said that a case has been registered and legal action initiated. – Correspondent

3 pharmacies sealed

Dhubri, Oct 7 - Three pharmacies were sealed for allegedly operating without proper permission and papers at Hatipota Bazar under Chapar PS by the Bilaispara civil administration along with Dhubri Police on Monday. In this regard, one Monwar Hussain of Dhirer Char Pt-II, has been arrested. Meanwhile, SDPO Bilasipara recovered a sizeable amount of illegal drugs from Nayahat area.– Correspondent

Primary teachers protest

JALAH, Oct 7 - Primary teachers of Jalah Block Primary Teachers Sanmilani under Jalah block organised a protest programme at the Jalah Block Elementary Education Office, Anchali premises here on Monday on the occasion of World Teachers’ Day (WTD). The programme was organised to demand grade pay of primary head teacher and Degree teachers, Chief Minister Special Scholarship Examination results of 2019, provincialisation of venture schools, cancellation of new pension scheme and continuing of the General Provident Fund etc. said Radha Kanta Talukdar, executive president of Salbari Subdivision Primary Teachers Sanmilani. The protesting teachers submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Assam and the Education Minister through the Block Elementary Education Officer, Jalah, Charaj Mohilary. – ANN Service

Swahid bedi reconstruction

NALBARI,Oct 7 - The Nalbari Anchalik Students’ Union has decided to reconstruct the swahid bedi (martyrs’ column) of Nalbari areas to pay their respect to the martyrs of Assam Movement. This decision was taken in a meeting held at Swahid Bhawan on Sunday. The meeting was presided over by Rubul Barman, president of Nalbari Anchalik Satra Santha. The meeting also demanded the government to repair the dilapidated roads of Nalbari town as soon as possible. The meeting was addressed among others by Bhabajit Bezbaruah, Gunanyoti Pathak and Akshay Deka. – Correspondent

Fire at Udalguri dc office

UDALGURI, Oct 7 - A fire engulfed the office of the Personal Assistant of the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district last evening in which various files and documents were burnt. The fire was due to a short circuit fault. No one was injured. Fire tenders extinguished the fire before it could spread further and the whole three storey building of the Deputy Commissioner office. – Correspondent

Sivasagar corona toll

SIVASAGAR, Oct 7 - In Sivasagar district, 62 persons have died of COVID-19 so far. A total of 4662 cases were detected COVID positive and 3882 of them discharged from various centres. A record 96010 persons have been tested (RTPCR 38651 and RAT 57369) till Tuesday. At the moment, there are 718 active cases in the district. – Correspondent
