TEZPUR, Oct 7 - Tezpur and its outskirts are wearing a festive look since the day of Mahalaya while several places, including Bhairabi mandir, besides other domestic and community puja spots in the Tezpur town, are vibrating with the chanting of Vedic mantras. This time Durga Puja is being celebrated by more than 160 puja committees who have set up attractively decorated pandals.
Among these this time the Sarbajanin Durga puja of Goroimari near here is celebrating its 150 years. The Dekargaon raas mandap Durga puja has this time crossed 92 years. Likewise, the 105-year-old Bahbari-Usha Natya Mandir Durga is also being celebrated in a befitting manner drawing huge crowds among different communities of the greater area.
On the other hand, this year the family puja of the Mukherjee family here is in its 156th year. The puja that has been performed near Tezpur sadar thana started way back in 1863. The Youngstar Club, which has been associated with the 25-year-old Bhairab Nagar Tila Puja is trying to celebrate the puja in a unique way spreading the message of brotherhood among the common masses. Likewise, like in the past the Durgabari Puja Association near Darrang College is trying to attract the people with their its beautifully decorated puja pandal. Meanwhile, the Harisabha Puja has this time attained 75 years of its celebration.
The historic family pujas of Gangacharan Bhattacharya of Kolibari, Gangaram Das of Tol Gereki area, the 73-year-old Durga Puja of noted freedom fighter Mahadev Sharma (who started the puja inside Tezpur Jail during the Quit India Movement when he was jailed), the 49-year-old Durga Puja of Iswar Prashad Chowdhury at Ganeshghat are also attracting the people. It may be mentioned here that alongwith the 121-year-old puja of Bengali Natya Samaj here, the historic 110-year-old Baan Theatre Durga Puja, Kamrupia Sanatan Dharma Mandali Puja, Tinmile Sarbajanin Durga Puja, Chanmari Durga Puja, Ajanta Club Durga Puja, NB Road Durga Puja, Depota Durga Puja etc., are among the oldest pujas of the historic Tezpur town.
