 APDCL workers protest

 BISWANATH CHARIALI, Oct 5 - In response to the call of the All India Power Workers’ Union, the Biswanath Chariali branch of the Assam State Power Workers’ Union staged a two-hour demonstration protesting the Government of India’s proposed move to privatise the power sector. The demonstration was attended by central secretary Mriganka Sharma, central publicity secretary Utpal Saikia, branch president Jugal Koch, and secretary Janiram Deka. The union members also protested against government policies in the promotion and regularisation of service of the employees of APDCL. – Correspondent

Youth Cong, NSUI committees

DOOMDOOMA, Oct 5 - The Rangajan Mondol Committees of the Youth Congress and NSUI under Kakopothar Block Congress Committee of Doomdooma LAC were constituted at a meeting held at Rangajan on Sunday. The Youth Congress committee was formed with Sanjraj Tanti as president and Shivcharan Bhumij as secretary while the NSUI committee was formed with Mantu Urang as president and Gunjan Gohain as secretary. Doomdooma MLA Durga Bhumij, Kakopothar Block Congress Committee president Lakhi Sonowal were present. – Correspondent

Plantation drive by SSB

GUWAHATI, Oct 5 - The 24 Bn SSB Rangiya conducted a Fit India Run cum Cleanliness Drive at Hahara Village LP School and Hahara Mandir, where officers and jawans took part. As many as 170 officers and jawans also participated in the 3.2-km run in Hahara village. Commandant Hrishikesh Sharma stressed the importance of fitness and hygiene and urged all to inculcate the habit of cleanliness. A special plantation drive was carried out, in which 450 betel nut saplings were planted at Guabari and Paharpur BOPs along the Indo-Bhutan border, stated a press release.

Land pattas distributed

SIVASAGAR, Oct 5 - Minister of Disaster Management, PWD and Revenue Jogen Mohan on Monday inaugurated a programme for distribution of land pattas in Sivasagar at the Sivasagar Yuva Dal Auditorium. Former minister and AGP leader Pradip Hazarika, Marketing department chairman Siva Pd Bhadra, Nazira SDO Lakhimi Dutta, Nazira circle officer Santanu Gogoi, Sivasagar circle officer Bhaskarjyoti Rajbonshi and Demow circle officer Indika Gogoi, BJP leaders Surovi Rajkumari, Prahlad Guwala, Pranjal Kotoky and Hemanta Gogoi were present. – Correspondent

Sonowal visits Majuli

JORHAT, Oct 5 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited Majuli on Sunday and participated in a plantation drive under the Carbon Neutrality Project at the Kamalabari Ghat. Under the project, 1,100 plants which have the capacity to survive floods have been planted. The Chief Minister visited the erosion-hit areas of Kamalabari Ghat and took stock of protection work. He also took stock of the construction of a cricket stadium being built under the aegis of the Assam Cricket Association. ACA president Ramen Dutta was also present. Sonowal later visited a retail outlet of women SHG products on the island. – Staff Correspondent

Cleanliness drive

SIVASAGAR, Oct 5 - The Assam State Urban Livelihoods Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission, Sivasagar Municipal Board (SMB) organised a cleanliness drive recently. SMB executive officer Bhaskar Jyoti Rajbongshi, assistant engineer Rajib Bora, and other officers were present. The officials distributed homemade masks made by SHGs and gloves to all SHG members and street vendors present on the occasion. – Correspondent

Online wildlife quiz

DERGAON, Oct 5 - A national online quiz on wildlife is being organised by nature organisation Aashray in association with Proficient Career Counselling, Dergaon on the occasion of Wildlife Week on October 7-8. The quiz is open for all with no age bar. It will be held in two stages – the preliminary meet will be held on Google Document, while the final will be conducted on Google Meet platform on October 8. The final six participants will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 6,000, Rs 5,000, Rs 4,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000. – Correspondent

AJP committee

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Oct 5 - A 14-member convening committee of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) was formed at a meeting held at Binapani Natya Mandir at Biswanath Chariali. The meeting was presided over by social worker Apurba Das. Sonitpur and Biswanath district convener Jan Bara explained the objectives, and the meeting was conducted by Diganta Borah. The committee was formed with Dr Gopal Phukan, Amrit Hazarika, Mridul Das, Palash Barkakti, Kandarpa Hazarika, Madhu Das, Birinchi Deka Baruah, Gopal Hazarika, Gunasindhu Deka Baruah, Bhaben Bania, Diganta Gohain, Deveshwar Baruah, Mintu Sharma, Shiva Borah, Gajen Bhuyan and Jintu Borah as convenors. – Correspondent

Woman’s body found

SILCHAR, Oct 5 - A woman’s body was found in the Longai river in Karimganj district. According to sources, the victim, aged around 23 years, hailed from Ambarkhana village of the district, and had gone missing on September 27. After a search, the father of the victim had informed police. On Saturday, police found the body in the Longai river. Karimganj SP Kumar Sanjit Krishna told The Assam Tribune that an absconding person has been suspected. – Staff Correspondent

DOOMDOOMA , Oct 5 - Pragati Sakha of Doomdooma Unit of Marwari Yuva Manch felicitated journalist and Tinsukia Zila Sahitya Sabha president Arjun Baruah recently. He was presented a phulam gamosa, a citation and a memento for his untiring service to the society even in the COVID-19 pandemic period. The journalist has been associated with Dainik Asam as the correspondent from Doomdooma since 1971. Pragati Sakha also felicitated Doomdooma PS officer-in-charge Moni Mohan Konch and a few sanitation workers of Doomdooma Municipal Board. – Correspondent
